Why doesn’t your Makeup Artist respond..?!

Hey there,

SO, this is a personal post which a lot of MUA’s / wedding vendors will probably relate to, but I also wanted to share this with people planning to book an artist/ vendor.  This is something you need to consider when trying to book someone.

I don’t mean to sound like I’m complaining or that I don’t appreciate the work.  I know I’m very lucky to be in a job I love doing and have such a passion for…!  But I also believe that having a life outside of my job means I can provide a better service to my clients.  Happy MUA means fantastic Makeovers..!!

So heres the explanation……

As a single mother of a young child, I do have set times I work in order to provide the best service I can to my clients but also trying to maintain a balance for ‘mother and son’ time.

I work from 8.30am – 3:00pm on clients, brides, trials and then I catch up on quick admin during the evenings from 9:00pm to midnight sometimes.. If I’m feeling burnt out then yes I refuse to work after 7:00pm and I put my phone/diary/laptop away..! So although my working day is broken up I am still working a full 38 hours during the week.  And then on the weekends I could be working anywhere between 14 – 20 hours.  On average during busy weeks that means working 50 hours /7 days a week for months on end without a day off..! We don’t get paid annual leave, we don’t get sick pay, we don’t get sympathy – if we are ill no-one cares – we get out of bed and go to work to beautify our clients with a smile (or a cough).  That is the nature of our job.

I am blessed to be in a position in my career where I receive numerous enquiries on different platforms.  This means juggling lots of different conversations, dates, times, slots and unfortunately people get missed.  This is not intentional..! I recommend if you don’t hear from me within 48 hours send me another message or call me..!

I have a website – it answers the majority of enquiries, the only thing it doesn’t do is show my availability.  10 messages a day I receive are.. ” are you available on –/–/–?” so thats where the dialogue begins. If a client wants a quick answer then the best way is to send a detailed enquiry which includes your name, date, location, time to be ready, type of booking and for how many people..  An example of the ideal message is below:

“Hi, my name is Sarah Smith.  I am getting married on the 4th July 2017.  I need to be ready for 9:00 am at the latest and I’m based in manchester.  I am enquiring for your availability on that date..? “

or

“Hi, my name is Sarah Smith.  I require Hair & Makeup on the 4th July 2017 for 4 people.   We need to be ready for 9:00 am at the latest and I’m based in manchester.  I am enquiring for your availability on that date..?”

Why I don’t reply on weekends..?

This is quite simple, I am working on my brides / clients.  My phone is on silent, I don’t travel with my diary when on location. I don’t pick up calls whilst working on clients, as they are paying for my undivided attention! As would you if you book me.  On the weekends I usually leave home at 6am and return between 7 – 8pm.. I clean/ sanitise my kit ready for the next day. This takes me to 9pm.  After this I sit down and spend some time with my son before he goes off to sleep.  I may sit down for a quick bite whilst quickly perusing my phone for any urgent messages before zonking out.. How glamorous..!  Its that simple.  Most popular MUA’s will tell you the same, there are not enough hours on a weekend to deal with messages as well.

48 hour working week response time..? thats too long..!

Again, simples – I don’t want to promise something I cannot deliver on.  Bear in mind if you send me a enquiry on a late thursday/ friday it might not get looked at until Monday.

I hope this helps you understand a little more.. Something to consider is Makeup Artists do get booked up quickly sometimes 18months in advance, so when you have dates/ times and venues sorted you need to get organised..! Planning is key..!

Enough of my moody margaret.  The next post will be me reviewing the Clinique Face cleaning brush..! Do come back..!!
